The relationship between turfgrass and air quality and establish its maintenance technique

The affection of air quality regulation is controlled by how to design and selection of plants. However, under the species selection of plants, turfgrass is always neglected. Especially, the turfgrass maintenance of Air Quality Control Districts is insufficiently. The objective of this study are to establish a correct method to manage our turfgrass ground, survey the area used and the species of turfgrass used in Taiwan, and to know what the turfgrass species show the best absorption of air dust. This study also wants to know what kind of trees that recommended by EPA are VOC tolerant species. Through the results we found that most turfgrass are used in the park、school campus、roadside、riverside、cemetery、home lawn、sports field、and theme parks. The overall turfgrass management is bad. The research results also revealed that centipedigrass and carpetgrass are inefficiently abs opt dust than zoysiagrass and bermudagrass. The mechanisms of this phenomenon are shown on the leaf texture and leaf surface structure after screened by SEM. Positive relations between dust absorption and the value of chlorophyll meter readings also found in this research. Couple species of trees that recommended by EPA were found to be low VOC tolerant species.
